I play Vampire Counts. I've always played Vampire Counts, for as long as there's been a Vampire Counts army to play. For me, all this Middlehammer malarkey comes down to dusting off my old Vampire Counts army, putting some fresh paint and a wee dob of glue on 'em, and shoving them around tables a few times a year.
Until last year. Last year, on the spur of the moment and my way out of Bristol Independent Gaming, I bought a Tomb Kings army. They've been sitting on the desk, occasionally graced with glue and primer and even, grudgingly, an actual paintbrush, slowly lurching their way toward completion over the last nine months. (I still have a Tomb Prince and Icon Bearer I'm going to paint, and ten Tomb Guard I probably won't, because I detest the Mantic Mummies and I want them out of my life.) They are, very much, an army I've bought not because I have a strong vision for how it should look or any particular desire to paint it; I just want to see how the other flavour of Undead play.
Next weekend they're going to get their chance. benjie03 is on his way up to the uncharacteristically sauna-like depths of rural Wales for a Skirmish, Border Patrol and proper Fantasy Battle encounter with his High Elves, and (after we've been to the pub and ensured we stand no chance of playing it properly) a drunken knockabout with his new Skaven. It's a chance for me to get some practice in with them before September, when (funds permitting) I shall troop down to Exeter Games Gathering and confront my former arch-rival and nemesis Lawrence.
Over the next week we'll introduce you to the scenarios, the participants, the story (for story there is) and the battlefield (once it's something approximating "ready").
But first: time to clean out the hobby room.
