Okedoke. So I've tried this sort of thing before and never succeeded. But this time will be different! This time I will prevail!
I have a couple of options in terms of what to do, namely:
High Elves
or
Skaven.
I'm quite tempted to do the Verminous Ratmen, but I'm not going to decide just yet. Instead I'm going to go and get the two armies out and look at them for a bit until one speaks to me and I decide to do that!
Meanwhile, here's a rough breakdown of things:
Each army is 2,000 points (in 6th Edition WFB reckoning). I will aim to paint at least one unit a month (and if I'm feeling funky, maybe add a character in there too).
Each month I will post WIPs and keep you all updated on how things are progressing.
At the end of things I hope to have my army painted!

I'm going to go and get the two armies out and look at them for a bit until one squeaks to me and I decide to do that! Fixed it for you. (High elfs are totally acceptable, but I saw a humour and couldn't resist.)

That's a lie.
High Elves are never acceptable. Around here we're tough on High Elves and the causes of High Elves.

Unfortunately for the servants of the Horned Rat (many squeaks and much cheese to them!) it was the High Elves of Tor Sethain that won the contest!
The army consists of:
High Elf Noble on Elven Steed in Dragon Armour High Elf Hero on foot with Battle Standard High Elf Mage on foot High Elf Mage on foot
20 Spear-Elves (full command) 14 Archers (full command) 14 Archers (full command) 9 Silver Helms (full command)
Tiranoc Chariot Tiranoc Chariot
Repeater Bolt Thrower Repeater Bolt Thrower
Very shooty, small, quite elite. 2,000 points. There is also an additional High Elf on Griffon left over from when I had planned to expand the army but I like the model so much I couldn't bear to get rid of it. So that'll be a "well done for finishing the army" model.
My first goal is to finish the Silver Helms. Two are already painted and the unit is undercoated so that's a start.
Of course, the first thing I have done is put paint on the Battle Standard Bearer. Because that helps towards my goal, right? Right?

Nigel would tell you to start with the standard, for it is what everyone else rallies around. You proceed in accordance with the Wisdom of the Ancient One.

Painting that many elves in the next few months, now that's challenging. Good luck to you.

Pictures! L-R: test Spear-elf, Lord, 9 Silver Helms, BSB
The rest of the army (including a random damaged Handmaiden Champion and riderless Elven Steed).

I done a thing!
I'm really pleased with the way he came out. The design on the standard was hugely intimidating but a quick Google later and I had enough inspiration to colour it in. Next up is the Army General and then I'll make a start on the Silver Helms proper. I realised after painting this fellow that I have nowhere to store the finished army properly. So I'm going to need to find £40 from somewhere and get myself some more DASIK inserts for my IKEA Detolf cabinets.

In a stunning display of actually getting stuff done, I finished off the Army General (well, until Intrigue At Court kicks in):
The shield's rune is a modified sethai, reading 'Tor Sethain', the name of the fortified trading city that the army hails from.

Good to see the elves fighting for women's suffrage. Intrigue at Court, worst rule ever, the reason I shelved the elves for that edition - and never really came back to them. I am not a tourney player, like a bit of fluff, but that was so random and so vital, seemed nonsense to me. Yes, I could have ignored it, wanted to, but most players I have known are very hesitant to change "official" rules. Played too many games with a mage as my commander, I just gave up in the end and turned to the dark side, to chaos.

As for the colours, heh, yes, there is that link (and it's a good one), but I actually based the colours on my son's scout group neckerchief!

Re: Intrigue at Court - it directly works to my advantage a lot of the time and I still don't like it. The looks on High Elf players' faces when they realise they're going to run the gauntlet of Fear and Terror tests with one hand behind their backs. To be honest I'm not keen on that High Elf book full stop; wasn't that the one what introduced "signature spells" in the form of Drain Magic? Anyway, your general's a flash lad GenSteiner. Bronze always looks better than silver on the High Elves in my opinion.

Really cool colour theme. Great job on the banner and general. They just scream "proud, contemptuous elves!"

Thank you for the words of encouragement! In keeping with the theme of contemptuous High Elves, have some command figures:
These two Silver Helms were actually started years and years ago; which is why the bases are slightly different to the other Elves I've done so far. I finished them off (a bit of touching up, and painting over the old Liche Purple bits with Xereus Purple in keeping with the new scheme) and now there are just seven Silver Helms to do. I've started in on another two (Musician and basic Silver Helm) which will, when done, give me at least half the unit. They're not too hard to do when done to Tabletop Standard which is lovely. The most difficult bit is making sure I don't get too much paint in places I shouldn't.
I was tempted to maybe make some of the horses greys but I like the idea of having a whole unit of white horses.

I am alive!
With some more Silver Helms. I really hate painting cavalry. Argh. Ugh. Bleah. Anyway, only five more to do and that's the unit finished! I have until the 12th of August before my first month is up so. Let's get cracking!
So far this month I've painted the Lord, the Battle Standard Bearer, and four Silver Helms. Not bad!
Now I just have to do the last five... wish me luck!
